Decorating our Class Door with Portraits of Ourselves

October 2, 2021

This week the whole School have engaged in a project producing self portraits. In true Seedlings style the children have had free reign to create their portraits however they choose – leading to a range of beautiful and very individual interpretations of who they are . Although it is still a work in progress… We have used more classical materials such as drawing, collage and playdough but also more unusual materials such as loose parts and placing and arranging. As you can see the children were really inspired by these and produced some beautiful and intricate pieces of artwork considering their age.

The focus this week also gave us an opportunity to explore some more challenging questions about identity, belonging and sense of self. The children showed great maturity talking about similarities and differences, exploring how friends can like different things/ look different and have different types of families. We even managed to challenge some stereo types over the week through spontaneous play opportunities. We like to think that no question is too big or too small in Seedlings Class and the children are already showing us that they feel comfortable to ask questions and express ideas freely.
