Introducing The Very Hungry Caterpillar

May 2, 2022

Our Talk For Writing story this term is ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and we introduced it to the children in a very exciting way this year with a magical egg that had mysteriously appeared in the classroom. It was lovely to hear the children make links in their learning as they tried to work out what it could be with most children making good guesses such as dinosaurs, chicks, ducks and birds. It also allowed us to discuss the differences in the ways animals gave birth to young – which the children also quickly made links to their own experiences of having younger siblings and mummies ‘growing babies in their tummies!’. Debi then retold the beginning of the story from memory which was enough for some of the children to instantly recognise that it must be a caterpillar inside. There was great anticipation as we hatched the egg and the children couldn’t wait to remind Debi that there must be caterpillars hiding somewhere in our garden as we had found butterflies only yesterday so promptly wanted to go out to see if we could find some. Unfortunately, they must have been hiding well but the children have spent the whole week looking and have loved using the spotter sheet and our Ipads to find out all about the different minibeasts that live in our garden and ways that we can look after them. We have also been learning about the story inside, becoming more familiar with it by retelling it over and over again. We have also been focusing on our counting skills through using the fruit to count, sequence and order the amounts – even using a recipe to make a fruit salad. Yet another busy week in Seedlings Class where we have made the most of every moment by making links in our learning and following the children’s interests to make the most of every moment!
