Tinkering Tuesday – Animal Enclosures

June 30, 2022

We were incredibly proud of the children this week as we decided that for Tinkering Tuesday we would revisit some learning from a few weeks ago. We hadn’t talked about the word enclosure for a while and We were surprised when one of our youngest children was the first to attempt to explain what one was saying ‘ a lion lives in one’. What an amazing description for someone who is only just three. The other children helped her expand her thinking explaining that ‘it had glass’ and that ‘ it helps animals that live in a zoo’. Then one very clever friend said ‘ an enclosure is a place that is a home for an animal that lives in the zoo. It keeps the animals with their family and means that we can look at them’. Debi then tried to make her own enclosure but she wasn’t very clever she made it too small and the sides too low. Luckily Seedlings class were on the case and helped her solve the problem as they are expert builders and expert tortoise learners who never give up! Finally we put the grown ups to work using all the areas of the classroom and with a very broad remit off they went to make their own enclosures. We had such an amazing array of enclosures from one made of magnetic letters, to intricate loose part enclosure, amazing hand drawn pictures, to complex junk modelling works of art. It was such a wonderful experience for the children as there was a buzz of excitement in the air, lots of teamwork going on and fantastic language being modelled by all the adults in the room. We were so grateful for the parents who came to help as their ideas and enthusiasm made for such a successful morning! You have to agree the final enclosures are amazing!
